Lot riding on WSU, USC tonight

COUGARS

Even Tim Floyd knows it. “Outside of UCLA, no team has given us more trouble than Washington State,” Floyd told the Los Angeles Times this week. Which makes tonight’s matchup at the Galen Center all that more interesting. The Cougars want to play in the postseason, any postseason. And the Trojans, who have lost three straight, want to make the NCAA tournament. A loss tonight might just kill those hopes – for either. Read on.

• We have our usual morning-of-a-game post, with lots of links to WSU and USC items, and we’ll get to those. But we have a couple of football-related links we want to pass on first. Former Eastern athletic director Darren Hamilton has called the S-R office a few times, and he talked with John Blanchette this week about the Eastern violations. He says some things about Paul Wulff and others in this story that might shock you. I highly recommend it. … Also, Jon Wilner of the Mercury News has his early look at the Pac-10 football race in the fall. I think I would want to see and read about spring football first before I start making predictions.

• OK, let’s move to basketball. We had our advance this morning along with some other items we put on this post last night. … Freelancer Howie Stalwick had this feature on Klay Thompson in the News Tribune and other West Side papers. … The Orange County Register, following the lead of the Oregon papers last week, talk about Thompson as a recruit that got away. As if no good player should ever head to Pullman. … The LA Times has a short preview of tonight’s game and a long look at Pac-10 officiating. … Nick Daschel of Buster Sports looks at the Pac-10’s week and rates the teams. Finally, one more story on Ernie Kent’s future. And there are still three weeks left in the regular season.

• That’s it for this morning. We’ll be back with our usual pregame post. Till then …
