Vandals earn road split

Nothing on the road seems to come easily for Idaho. The Vandals nearly gave up an 11-point lead but held on for a 71-68 win at Fresno State on Saturday night. Idaho moves to 14-14 overall, 7-7 in the WAC.

Senior guard Trevor Morris was a catalyst yet again for UI. Morris started the year in a terrible shooting slump, but he’s posted two productive games in a row. He had a team-high 14 points Saturday, while point guard Mac Hopson had 13 points and 10 assists.

At least we got the split. It would be nice to win these last two home games and end the season with a winning record. That is a big leap for the team this year. It would be great for the seniors to end their career on a high note.

This team has exceeded all expectations. Let’s support them by either watching them in person on Thursday or, if you can’t make it in person, watch them on ESPN/Altitude. They are certainly entertaining this year.

Idaho has a realistic chance to finish the WAC season at 9-7, and possibly a win in the first round of the WAC tourney. That would be excellent. As stated above, this team has exceeded all expectations. Who knows, the WAC tourney is all about getting hot at the right time. We have shown we can play with anybody in the league.

Next year should be even better as we get added help at the point guard position and some size inside.

This team has a legitimate chance at the WAC tourney. All the WAC teams have shown vulnerability at some point this season.

808Vandal is right, a bit more size (and strength = big bodies) on the inside would really help the team next year.

IIRC, We redshirted a 6-10 freshman this year, and the point guard transfer from Pacific had to sit out due to transfer rules. Assuming they are both still with the team, they will really help next year.

Jefferson has really improved as the year has gone along. He can be a real force inside and is finally learning how to stay out of foul trouble. Add another 6-10 body inside with him and we will start winning the rebound battle and shutting down the oponents inside game.

Also, while Hopson is a GREAT pg IMO, Idaho doesn’t really have anyone else that can consistently run the offense. We need another solid guard that can create and run the offense. Especially when Hopson is on the bench taking a breather. At the UH game here in Hawaii, Hopson had an off night. Not trying to bag on him as he has really played well and consistent all year. However, in that game, there was nobody else to take over the game and our offense really struggled. I think that Idaho can compete for the WAC title next year.

I was hoping Watson would be the guy to take some of the pressure off Hopson, but he hasn’t been as consistent offensively as we’ve needed. It’s a tall order to ask him to defend the opponents best perimeter guy and be option 1A on the other end too. I would expect the NIC recruit to take on some of that role next year.
