Tatum shoots Vols to lead at half
Tennessee's Cameron Tatum scorched Gonzaga with four 3-pointers and a career-high tying 19 points in the first half to stake the Volunteers to a 40-33 halftime lead. Tatum's deep 3-pointer gave the Vols their biggest lead 31-16 before GU battled back.
The Bulldogs actually led 6-0 at the outset as UT missed its first six shots, but Tatum started a 19-3 run with a 3-pointer and quickly followed with two more from long distance. The Bulldogs rallied behind Matt Bouldin's 12 points and three rapid-fire 3s of their own by Ira Brown, Josh Heytvelt and Steven Gray to close within 33-27. GU cut the margin to 36-31, but J.P. Prince's two free throws with 38.9 seconds left bumped Tennessee's lead to seven.
Gonzaga was getting handled on the boards (15-7 at one point), but made up most of the deficit (22-19 at half), which corresponded with its comeback. The Bulldogs misfired at the free throw line, making just 5 of 12. Jeremy Pargo had a tough half, committing five turnovers and making just 1 of 5 shots.
