Catching up on a Saturday morning

Just a quick post with links from the morning. We’ll have more prior to the game. Read on.

• There are a few advances available, including the one we had in the S-R. Plus, freelancer Howie Stalwick had his advance that ran in the P-I and other Puget Sound papers. The Oregonian’s John Canzano has this column on Ernie Kent and his future, saying the athletic administration wants him to fail so he can be fired.

• There is also football news, with the release of the Cougars’ fall schedule (second item). As I’ve written before on this blog, there are negotiations underway that would move the Stanford game to the Thursday before it is currently scheduled. If you are wondering, the athletic department has already received the OK from the school’s administration. Speaking of Thursday, there is a little consternation in these parts about the Civil War being played on a Thursday.

• Around the Pac-10, basketball version, there is truly a “big game” in the Bay Area today, with Mike Montgomery returning to Stanford with his Cal team. And there are a couple of big ones in Southern California, with Arizona State trying to stay alive in the conference race at UCLA while Arizona and USC square off in somewhat of an elimination game. The Huskies also take on OSU tonight.

• That’s it for this morning’s early post. We’ll be back before the game. Till then …
