The basketball team takes the court again tonight for another midweek, nonconference game. IPFW plays in the Summit League with Oral Roberts, who defeated Stanford last night. Oral Roberts also was the Cougars first-round NCAA opponent in Sacramento a couple years back but I really don’t know how I’ve wandered so far from my original point so let’s get back to whatever it was … Oh ya. Basketball tonight, football this morning. Read on.

• Washington State: We’ll start with a link to our post last night with the news from football practice. … We also had this feature on some guys who are the backbone – or is the right cliché heart and soul? – of the team. … We also have our Pac-10 picks. Overall good, spread bad. … Freelancer Howie Stalwick has a basketball story. … Someone asked for this link on an earlier post, so I’m passing along Paul Sorenson’s commentary that appeared on Cougfan yesterday.
• Around the Pac-10: ESPN.com’s Ted Miller makes his picks and also tells us what to watch for this Saturday. … Buster Sports Nick Daschel believes these things could happen. … Washington: The Husky coaches are on the road recruiting this bye week. … Oregon State: Maybe it wasn’t Knute Rockne, but whatever Sean Canfield said earlier this year, it helped the Beavers to another great season…. Oregon: Mike Belloti is settling in to his new role as AD. … California: Jahvid Best talks with the media for the first time since his horrific injury. … Stanford: They’re still talking about the USC game around Stanford. … USC: The Trojans are trying to fix the run defense this week. …UCLA: Rick Neuheisel knows he’s hard on quarterbacks. … Arizona State: The choice for quarterback has been narrowed to two. … Arizona: The Wildcats are trying to get ready for the stress Jeremiah Masoli puts on a defense.

• That’s it for this morning. We’ll be back before the basketball game tonight. Until then …

I know what I will be thankful for this thanksgiving.. the start of cougar basketball!!!!!!!!!! Thank god we are nearing the end of this disaster of a season and moving on to hoops where we have a shot to be competitive.
Lopina should have been named starter after saturday for senior day. I say we start him against the huskies too. He will bring out a fresh attitude maybe the boys will play harder for a senior and he was the qb of the big comeback last year. At least it would inject some fire in us for a bit. If Tuel can go give him time too but start out with Lopina just see if it brings some energy and attitude to this team. Against UCLA his energy / attitude is 10 times of that Lobbestahls when he is on the field. I see a lot of effort knowing its his last go with the pads on out of Lopina.

Searching for the silver lining, I guess the good thing about Cougar Football this year (and last) is that you really don't have to dedicate a lot of time to it. You can sit down to watch the game, and in about 3-4 minutes, WSU is down by 14 or more and the outcome is decided. No angst, no finger clinching, no edge of your seat tension, no pondering of alternative scenarios to victory. Once down by 14, the game goes on but the outcome is pre-determined. It really opens up the rest of Saturday afternoon for other activities.
This Apple Cup is going to be embarrassingly-turn-off-the-TV-bad.
Thank God for basketball….

Paul Sorenson's commentary article on why the coug football team is having a losing season, is right on the money. Stoops and arizona took five years rebuilding, so the cougs has two or three more yrs . Suiting up 45 players for sat's game with ore.st. We are in tough , but as some on looker once said when the going gets tough the tough get going, ha, this same someone was siting on the sidelines safely out of harms way. I think all of us fans should stand up and applaud for these 45 tremendous players whom are knocking heads with Oregon State , possibly the best team in the pac-ten this yr. I know my friends and i really appreciate what these players and also the coaching staff's efforts in turning this program around. The cougs turn at winning is not to far off. Lets injoy saturday,s game. Good luck and thanks to our outgoing Sr,s.GO COUGS

In my future life, I aspire to be a backup quarterback. Those guys are always so dang popular.
I find it incredible that people forget why Lopina was benched the first place. Here's to betting you'll remember over the next two games …

The date of June 30, 1946 is probably meaningless to most all, but when my grandfather passed away a while back and I found a Champion of the Big Ten-University of Chicago High Jump Trophy in his personal effects, it caused me pause to ponder the facts. The University of Chicago in the Big Ten????
It was on that date that the University of Chicago quit as a member of the Big Ten Conference which it had help found in 1896 due to a conflict between Academics and Athletics.
Now before one jumps to the conclusion that I am proposing Wazzu quit the PAC-10 due to an Academic vs. Athletics conflict, stop right there.
But………….I do want to suggest that the disparity between Wazzu and the rest of the PAC-10 from a financial standpoint does merit consideration??????
Wazzu has been and will continue to be the poor sister of the PAC-10 for the foreseeable future. Hell, we can't even get a Stadium Phase III upgrade built which will still keep us at the smallest capacity by far of all PAC-10 teams.
With money being King in College Athletics these days, an honest discussion of whether the Cougars should continue in this vein warrants some consideration, no?
Paul Sorenson's article does hit the nail on the head and yet it does not even hint at the financial aspects of what Wazzu is up against.
Scheduling quality opponents will become increasingly difficult and more money games at the likes of Auburn, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, etc. will become commonplace (again). This almost guarantees continued losing seasons, as the travel and injuries take a toll.
When one harkens back to the Saint Mike Era and thinks about it objectively, it wasn't until those type schedules were factored out that consistent winning took place.
My point is this………the road back to the promised land is long, hard and full of pot holes. Cougars whose blood pumps Crimson are going to have to dig deep in their collective pocket books to achieve parity in the PAC-10.
Are YOU committed?
Go Cougs!!
