WSU, Pac-10 links for Thursday

The nice part about attending a Catholic grammar school? Most of the nuns were baseball fans – and yes, when I was young, there were still a few nuns teaching. As baseball fans, they wanted to know who was winning the World Series – and yes, when I was young, there was only the World Series, no division, no league championship. So on my birthday, I was oftentimes assigned to listen to the game and report the score. It was my first true interaction with social networking. And now I blog. Wow. How times change. Read on.

• Washington State: After we finish with our usual football post, we’ll add another separate post on basketball. We attended a workout yesterday and watched attentively as new coach Ken Bone ran the Cougars through their paces. But before we get there, let’s cover the football links. … We had our story today that’s about Arizona State and the quarterback position. And we put up our practice notes (end of post) last night. … Eugene Register-Guard columnist George Schroeder asked UO coach Chip Kelly about Paul Wulff’s comments regarding the late challenge (you can read them in their entirety on this post) and wrote this column.

• Around the Pac-10: Ted Miller of has a couple items: His picks and what to watch this weekend. … Buster Sports’ Nick Daschel talks about instant replay – I’ve noticed this year that I’m not seeing the same thing as the replay official; when the call should be overturned it rarely is; when it shouldn’t, it seems to be – and gives his picks. … Washington: The name is familiar. The school he plays for is not. Heck, like Flounder, he was a legacy. … One of Jeff Tuel’s high school classmates may start at free safety for the Huskies. … Oregon State: This Beaver cornerback is as big as many safeties. … Oregon: Nate Costa has made a long trip back to be the Ducks quarterback. … Cal: Once again, the Bears are hibernating. … Stanford: The Cardinal’s road to the Rose Bowl runs through Corvallis, where they will have to overcome the Rodgers brothers. … USC: Being that his right arm is barely being used on the football field, Mitch Mustain might take up baseball again. …UCLA: It’s official, Kevin Prince is the Bruins quarterback this week. … Arizona State: With Thomas Weber still out, Bobby Wenzig is kicking for the Sun Devils. And backup quarterback Brock Osweiler will play Saturday, according to Dennis Erickson. … Arizona: This is the type of special teams player every coach wants.

• That’s all for this morning. We’ll be back with basketball post soon and after practice this afternoon. Until then …
