Kickoff coming up for WSU, SMU

COUGARS

We don't have a lot more to share at this late time, but we will get you up to date on some last minutes things. Read on.
••••••••••

• If you had a chance to read the paper this morning, you might have seen the starting lineups on the Game Day page. If you're observant, you might have noticed one change up front on the defensive side of the ball. Dan Spitz, a redshirt freshman from Mead High, is getting his first start today at left end. Since practice started in early August, Spitz has been the poster boy for redshirting as a freshman. The 6-foot-6 Spitz put on weight, got stronger and took giant steps as a player. With the injury to Kevin Kooyman, Spitz might have started last week but those plans were derailed due to the flu. Now senior Jesse Feagin missed most of the week with the same illness and Spitz has his shot. Keep an eye on 92 if you're in Martin Stadium. ... Another possible change: Toby Turpin might be back in the starting lineup, replacing Josh Luapo. That's not official but I think it will happen. ... Also expect WSU to play a lot of nickel today, but you were already expecting that, I'm sure. Eric Block will be the nickel back. ... Though he didn't practice this week, James Montgomery will play today. ... Jared Karstetter has recovered from the illness that kept him off the field Thursday. ... June Jones looks funny in a regular shirt. All I can ever remember is him in an Hawaiian print. ... After today, the Cougars play in Pullman once over the next six weeks.

• That's it for pregame chat. We'll be back at halftime with a short post then after the game ends. Until then …
