West Valley earns major win
To a trip outside the Greater Spokane League to watch West Valley against Clarkston. The Eagles hadn't beaten the Bantams since 1998 in the second of two games between them that season, coaches said. So the 24-6 WV win keeping them undefeated and 2-0 in the GNL was huge.
Don't know how many times quarterback Drew Clausen ran out of trouble (he carried eight times in the first half and it was most of them), but two stood out. One, he dropped back to pass, scrambled in the face of the rush and cut back to an opening for a 32 yard gain. The second, he surely was going to be sacked, but ran around until the Clarkston secondary came up, then - sprinting right - found Ryan Dahlstrom behind the DBs for the team's final score and 24-0 halftime lead. That, and the Eagle defense's ability to hunker down in the red zone impressed.
First full night of league games proved enlighting. Pullman, winless in three non-counters, rallied up in Colville to beat the pre-season favorite (well, one of six favorites). Deer Park continued unbeaten with its second straight shutout. Medical Lake is rejuvenated, losing by a point, 14-13 at home against rival Cheney.
The Cardinals are at Colville, Stags in Clarkston and Cheney at Pullman for round two.
No surprises in the GSL - Lewis and Clark thumped East Valley. After Ferris' quick start over Mt. Spokane are the 4A teams simply that much better than 3A this year?
