GU up 29-27 at half

Gonzaga leads Baylor 29-27 at half, despite playing the last five minutes without Steven Gray, who left with back spasms. It appeared he tweaked his back while picking up the ball after Demetri Goodson drew a charging foul.

More below.

Gray had two points, two steals and two assists before leaving in obvious pain.

Gonzaga did a pretty good job against Baylor’s long, 2-3 zone. The Zags scored quite a bit in the paint -- and actually missed numerous open looks from close range. GU was able to get to the foul line and generally kept attacking, despite getting five shots swatted by the Bears.

The Bulldogs led by as many as six and had opportunities to stretch it, but couldn’t get shots to fall. GU made 11 of 31 shots, and missed all four attempts from beyond the 3-point line.

The teams combined for 24 fouls (Baylor 13, GU 11) and 21 turnovers (Baylor 11, GU 10). The Bears cashed in with 12 free throws to GU’s 7.

Rob Sacre paced GU with nine points and Sam Dower added eight on 3-of-8 shooting.

Baylor’s LaceDarius Dunn, guarded by Gray before he suffered his back injury, struggled after making a first-possession 3. He’s 1 of 7, but he’s made 4 of 4 free throws. Dunn has three turnovers. GU’s Goodson has five.

Kelly Olynyk has three fouls. Sacre, Harris and Marquise Carter each have two. A.J. Walton has three fouls and four other Bears (including Dunn) have two.
