Moos says yes to WSU

COUGARS

It’s official. Bill Moos said yes today to Washington State University’s offer to replace Jim Sterk as athletic director, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Spokesman-Review.

Moos, a former Washington State football player who earned all Pac-8 honors in 1972, was formerly the athletic director at the University of Oregon. When he and Oregon parted in late 2006, Moos signed a 10-year agreement worth $2 million – payable yearly – that limited where he could work. Negotiations between Moos and Oregon to iron out an agreement have been ongoing, though whether there has been a resolution is not known.

Here is more on Moos.

Hell YES!! Good news on the Palouse. This is a great decision.

Hey Vince, do you have any info on the contract that Moos has or will be signing?

  • kaddy on February 23 at 12:29 p.m.

Huge get for WSU…we were overdue for something good to happen, and this is it.

Having someone with Bill's experience and personality will pay tremendous dividends for Phase 3 & 4, and with regards to the Pac-10's new television contract.

    Nice work, Dr. Floyd!

great news! Oh! by the way… the clock is running paul w.

  • cougfan2000 on February 23 at 2:19 p.m.

Rufus I doubt the clock is running since Moos helped hire PW.

  • RobE on February 23 at 2:25 p.m.

Moos didn't help hire PW. Moos was on the search committee that came up with the pool of candidates that were interviewed. Not the same as having helped hire him. I've heard that he was a huge proponet of John L. Smith.

I agree with rufus, for PW, the heat just got hotter.

Let's take it one step at a time. Great news about Bill Moos as new AD. However, at nearly 60 it will be hard to expect the same from him physically that we “should” have had from him at 45 upon leaving Montana for Oregon rather than WSU. Instead, Sam Smith brought us Rich Dickson. He should be just as capable and certainly Bill has the experience. So, Coug fans, let's don't go getting all “Hyper” that our issues are all solved overnight as soon as he assumes the AD duties.

With that in mind…I suggest “rufus” as…Wazzu Cougar Head Football Coach In Waiting!!

    GO COUGS!!…GO MOOS!!…GO WULFF!!

Best news in Coug Nation for a long, long time. Anyone who has doubts has never met him and doesn't understand how he knows all aspects of the “special” circumstances of Cougar athletics and how to turn those circumstances into positives. From farmer donors of the Palouse to Fat Cats in Western Wash., he can talk their lingo and get results.

Yowser, talk about the right guy, at the right time, to do the right job.

Wazzu has a history like the Born Loser, i.e. always having a black cloud lurking over one's head. However, since hindsight is always 20-20 it becomes easy to lament lost opportunity.

This time we got it right (albeit 20 years late) and as Bill Moos said, “He's got one more rodeo in him”. So……this cowboy is willing to sign on again, for the last time I got involved as the Yakima Cougar Club President, I did so with the stipulation that I would work until we got the Coug's to the Rose Bowl (and we did it not once, but twice).

I listened closely to what Bill Moos said and couldn't agree more with his comments regarding the fact that you lay the foundation with recent graduates/small donors and then move them up the pyramid and get them more involved/committed.

Jim Sterk had lofty goals of 10,000 members by 2010, but no follow through as to how to sign them up/get their committment. Bill Moos has the background and experience of how to close the deal and get that level (and more) of involvement.

The timing of this hire is of paramount importance, for if Wazzu misses this train leaving the station, we may never recover. By this I mean the stadium upgrades MUST get completed in the next two years for us to remain competitive in the PAC-10.

Should the conference expand and a new TV contract enacted (both highly probable outcomes in this increasingly competitive era), Wazzu is not going to be able to command an equal level of exposure with an antiquated stadium/minimum budget.

I believe whole heartedly that Wazzu is poised to accomplish great things across the board, but only if we belly up to the bar and provide the levels of support that a top quality PAC-10 Athletic Program demands.

Bill Moos could not have been more spot on when he said, “We must think like champions”. For to long we have relegated ourselves to second class citizen status allowing UDub and others to reap the bounty.

Let it be known that Wazzu has a leader again which can (and will) take us to the promised land of Bowl Games and NCAA Tournament berths. The time is now to loosen the purse strings and get on board.

    Go Cougs!

Bill Moos is a class act and a great personality. I'm glad to have him on board.

  • rengel on February 23 at 6:26 p.m.

As a past football player with Bill, I wish him the best. Bill will bring hard work and results. As for the administrative team he governs, you're in for some fun! Bill & I had fun keeping the '70 - '74 Coug team loose ….. some of my best memories …. remember Bill.

“And now for your viewing pleasure” …. “Bruce” - Engel, from Minneapolis.

  • dhmeany on February 23 at 6:35 p.m.

Are you kidding me! Someone is worried if he physically is up to the job as opposed to when he was 45.

He runs a freaking cattle ranch, pretty much by himself! I think he has plenty of energy left. Last I checked, the AD isn't out there running wind sprints or making tackles.

If I had to chose between now and back then, I would take NOW — this is a more critical period in WSU athletics…and Moos is even more seasoned then back then, with a proven template on how to get things done. This is his last rodeo, as he says, and it sure will be interesting.

The biggest thing is he's a coug, and we can all related to him.

I don't think anyone expects things to change overnight. I think more than anything, he will rally the masses like never before.

But remember coug fans, everyone is showing excitement right now, but how many will buck up and donate?

    That remains to be seen.

Overall, a great day for the Cougs!

rengel, did you begin in Bert Clark's last year or Sweeney's first? You must have some stories about ” the Irishman from Butte!
