Taking a basketball break between figure skating stories I surfed over to ESPN and saw Charlie Creme’s bracketology and story. Holy smoke, Eastern Washington is in the field. Holy smoke, I forgot to blog my women’s notebook, with the Eagles, unbeaten in Big Sky Conference play, as the lead.
Of interest in the projected NCAA Tournament field, 11th-seeded Gonzaga is slotted for Norman, Okla., to play six-seed Maryland in the Sacramento Regional. A win would likely put them in line to play three-seed host Oklahoma. EWU is a No. 15 playing Ohio State in Minneapolis. I have lost all my bookmarks and cannot take the time to surf my usual haunts for tidbits. Please feel free to share any information you discover.
Our thoughts are prayers are with Dan Fitzgerald’s family. The former Gonzaga coach was one of the first people to welcome me in Spokane and make me feel part of the sports community. As many have said, he was a champion of basketball and that includes women’s basketball. He did many unique things at Gonzaga to expose the women’s game, including mixed intrasquad games, and as long as the subject was basketball he was willing to talk all night - and often did. If you saw Dan once a day or once a year, he greeted you as a long lost friend and made you feel like the most important person in the room. He is going to be missed by everyone.
