COUGARS

Washington State is a little thin at the defensive tackle spot, and the Cougars got a little thinner Tuesday when redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Dan Spitz was suspended for the first nine games of the season after failing a NCAA-mandated drug test last fall. Click here for the story.

• As the story says, what caused Spitz to fail the drug test isn't known. But if you read Wulff's quote, it sounds as if Spitz may have taken something he thought was OK but it wasn't. There is an appeal process, but I'm not sure Spitz availed himself of it. We hope to be able to answer those questions later. As for Barrington, he had an opportunity to play a lot this fall at one of the outside spots, but that's gone now.

• That's all for now. We're en route to Los Angeles (checking in with my dad before the Pac-10 meetings), but we'll update the blog if needed if needed. Until then ...
