Alex Pounds had been playing well lately, but the Coeur d’Alene golfer was wondering when it would finally show up for 18 holes.

It did Monday and at the right time. Pounds, a senior, shot a 3-under 69 in the first round of the Idaho 5A state tournament at Avondale Golf Club in Hayden.

Pounds takes a two-stroke lead into the final round today. His team is in third, nine strokes behind leader Eagle (297). Centennial trails by one.

“I’ve been playing pretty well lately, but just hadn’t put it together,” said Pounds, who had four birdies that were offset by just one bogey. “It came together. I limited my mistakes and made a few birdies.”

Pounds wonders, though, what could have been. The left-hander hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation on the tight 6,335-yard layout.

“I had a lot of 15-foot birdie putts,” Pounds said.

CdA’s 306 (four of five players’ scores are counted) included rounds of 75 from senior Andrew Roller and a 79 from freshman Michael Porter. Junior Brennan Stillinger and sophomore Hunter Kraft each shot 83.

Eagle was led by Ty Travis, who shot 72. Jacob Ready and David Elliott led Centennial with 71s. They’re tied for second.

CdA coach Bryan Duncan thought his team would shot seven to eight shots better.

“We’re not out of it,” Duncan said. “I’ve seen us make up more strokes than that. Eagle had a great day. They’re a solid team. It was a wonderful day for weather, but it’s supposed to be a different story tomorrow.”

A thunderstorm was predicted to hit the CdA area Monday evening with a 60 percent chance of rain today.

In the 5A girls tourney, Lewiston had the best opening round (356), three strokes better than Centennial.

Danny Jagelski led a balanced Lewiston effort with an 83.

Post Falls shot 397 and is in seventh. Rachel Westby led the Trojans with a 94.

Tyler Barker of Vallivue had the low round with a 76. Three strokes back are Bayle Borchers of Mountain View and Kathryn Buckingham of Centennial.
