• No, there wasn't a quid pro quo. Hire Jim Sterk as athletic director and you get Xavier Thames for your basketball team. Conspiracy theorists might have fun with that type of connection, but for our purposes here, it's just a humorous note. We had a short story in today's S-R putting Thames' transfer on the record. ... We covered WSU's NCAA baseball hopes this week – it seems a big weekend against last-place USC starting Friday is key – and the Register-Guard covered the same ground today concerning Oregon and Oregon State. The Cougars' RPI jumped from 47 to 32 by winning two of three from Stanford on the road last weekend. There are eight Pac-10 teams in the top 43. ... Speaking of baseball, CougCenter had this post on WSU.

• That's it for today. We have to chip in on prep coverage this weekend, so we won't be getting down to watch baseball again until Sunday (too bad Tuesday's game was rained out). On Sunday we'll try to sum up the USC series and look to next week, when the Cougars have two non-conference games scheduled and finish up Pac-10 play with a trip to UCLA. If news breaks, of course, we'll be here. Until then ...
