As the time winds down to Saturday's home game with USC, the Washington State Cougars put together a spirited practice Wednesday, staying on the practice field about 20 minutes shorter than the previous day. For what they accomplished, read on.

• The practice was shortened, WSU coach Paul Wulff said, to bring a sense of urgency to each session. It seemed to work, as there was a different vibe to the workout. ... Wulff felt the Cougars are where they should be in their preparation, though he expects the practice film to show quite a bit that needs to be cleaned up Thursday and Friday. That's just the way it is. ... Defensive tackle Bernard Wolfgramm practiced for the second consecutive day and actually took part in team drills. That was a positive, Wulff said, as was Wolfgramm's ability to get through back-to-back practices. Wolfgramm ran with the twos as Justin Clayton remained with the starters. ... Tight end Andrei Lintz was used with the scout team. ... Defensive back Anthony Carpenter, who was used a lot against SMU, returned to practice in full gear for the first time this week. ... Safety Chima Nwachukwu was still in yellow, as was Jack Wilson. ... If practice time is any indication, and often it is, Bennett Bontemps may just suit up Saturday, play on special teams and be a backup slot receiver. ... Kristoff Williams, recovering slowly from turf toe, was running better and took part in some of the team drills. ...
