Cougars pound out another practice

COUGARS

We've been off the practice field for a while and our feet now have a bit of feeling in them. So we can put together our blog post because, as many of you probably suspected, we do a lot of writing with our toes. Read on.

••••••••••

• This was a physical practice. As physical as I've seen this spring, though I was out of pocket for a couple weeks either in Los Angeles or New York. (Wow, that sounded like a snobby, big-city remark, but it wasn't meant that way. Just saying we were following postseason basketball instead of spring football.) The Cougars did a new punt coverage drill which featured a cover man avoiding a blocker then have to explode into another 10 yards downfield. That drill included some big hits. And then they did the Oklahoma drill and, as always, the mano-a-mano battles up front not only got physical, they got heated at times as well. Then there were the usual team segments. ... But for the physical nature of the practice, coach Paul Wulff wans't happy afterward, saying it wasn't a great day emotionally. He acknowledged it was physical at times, especially early, but some guys didn't handle it well and started to lag as practice wore on. Maybe that's why Wulff called the team together before the final team session and exhorted them to finish with emotion. ... Linebacker Sekope Kaufusi had to leave practice after suffering what looked to be a leg injury, the severity of which was unknown. He did walk off under his own power. ... Wulff seemed pleased with the way the new first-team offensive line lineup, with John Fullington at left guard and Wade Jacobson at right tackle, has been playing. Though he wouldn't commit to any talk that seemed to indicate this was the group we would see in the fall, he did say "it seems to be looking pretty good right now. We're going to continue to rep it and as long as it's working, we're going to continue that way." The offensive line was physically stronger much of the day than the injury-saddled defensive line. ... WSU announced another player signing a letter of intent. Defensive end Eli Edwards, a 6-foot-2, 246-pounder from Cerritos College in Southern California, has finally signed. Edwards will have three years to play two when he arrives in the fall. ... As most of you know, next week is Spokane week for the WSU athletic department, with Monday being the day next year's uniforms are unveiled at the Davenport Hotel. But one of the more interesting aspects for the football program is Friday evening and Saturday morning, when the staff will hold a coaching clinic for high school coaches at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park. The Cougar staff will speak Friday while former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach will headline Saturday's activities. Coaches can find more information and register on-line here. ... Our story on the position battle for the center spot is up.

• That's it for now. We'll be back in the morning with more. Until later ...
