WSU faces Bears tonight

COUGARS

We're a little late today because we are on our way to the Bay Area and all the connections were quite tight. But we've run down links and we have some notes, so read on.

••••••••••

• Washington State: We posted the news about possible football staff changes a couple nights ago, then updated it yesterday. Though nothing has happened yet – all the assistants are under contract until March 31, contrary to reports on other websites; I have copies of said contracts – there will be changes, I'm sure of that. But it is the middle of recruiting season and there are a lot of criteria to fulfill before a hire is made, so there are no changes yet. Will it be the two guys mentioned? The news came out of the coaching convention, where people are looking for jobs and others are looking to fill jobs, so there is a good chance the names came up. But I'm not sure defensive line coach Malik Roberson and linebackers coach Travis Niekamp are both leaving Pullman. We'll see how the changes play out. … We had our look at the basketball weekend in today's paper, and we also had this note about how tough Maples Pavilion has been for WSU over the recent years. … Here's a scouting report from the Bay Area.

• Around the Pac-10: Things have been going pretty well for Washington the first half of the season. But this week has been tough and it will be interesting to see how the Huskies handle it on the Bay Area trip. … With the departure of freshman Gary Franklin, another freshman, Allen Crabbe, is getting a lot of playing time for Cal. … Stanford's freshmen are buying into Johnny Dawkin's defensive scheme. … The biggest game tonight is in Eugene, when USC visits Oregon. Not because of the game on the court, but for the court itself. … UCLA isn't as mentally tough as Ben Howland would like. … Arizona State got healthy at the expense of Tulsa. … In football news, UW will open the renovated Husky Stadium in 2013 against Boise State. … Norm Chow looks to be out at UCLA, but he may stay in the Pac-12 at Utah. … Stanford is doing interviews for its coaching vacancy, but the best candidate in this person's view is already on campus.

• That's all for this morning. The Cougars will be at Cal for a 7:30 start tonight and we'll be back before hand with notes. Until then …
