Pilots thump Santa Clara; LMU’s Teel booted

No. 4 Portland defeated No. 5 Santa Clara 75-64 in the women's quarterfinals of the WCC Tournament. Portland's Tara Cronin (Gonzaga Prep) followed her own miss with 20 seconds left and Amy Pupa added a layup before the buzzer as Portland boosted its lead to 11 at half. Cronin made four free throws in the final minute as the Pilots maintained a comfortable lead.

Cronin scored 12 points (she needed seven) to reach 1,000 in her career. Junior guard ReZina TecleMariam led Portland with 28 points and four assists.Natalie Day added 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pilots (16-14) will face No. 1 seed Gonzaga at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Elsewhere, Loyola Marymount's men, winners over San Diego last night, will be without senior guard Vernon Teel the rest of the season. Teel has been booted off the team, the school announced Saturday morning.

"This was an internal decision that we felt was best for our team and our program,"  coach Max Good said in a statement. "This was strictly based on internal issues and was not attributed to behavior in or around the WCC tournament."

Teel apparently wasn't happy with being removed late in Friday's win.
