Countdown to tip-off

It's time for some basketball - and a welcome home to Kate Loper (above) - so hunker down for some serious reading about the area Division I women's teams.

Today was our special section. With last year's success, the leadoff was Gonzaga but we touched on all four teams in one story. Also on-line are predictions. And a reminder we tweet from @SRtrim, starting with the season opener for Gonzaga.

Gonzaga opens against Hofstra Friday afternoon at 4 and then goes to Stanford on Sunday.

Washington State heads into the hurricane at Penn State, playing the Nittany Lions on Friday and Middle Tennesssee or UNC-Wilmington on Sunday.

Eastern Washington plays Corban (the team GU spanked in its exhibition last Saturday) on Friday and then gets a visit from Hofstra on Sunday, which gives Post Falls grad Kate Loper, a sophomore for the Pride, two games at "home."

Idaho plays Corban on Saturday and then goes to North Dakota on Monday.

Among the other stories found, The Seattle Times touched bases with Gonzaga sophomore Taelor Karr, the transfer from Kansas State, packaged with 5 things to watch. As long as we're there, here are the Washington Husky recruits.

Once again, a reminder, ESPN.com has the comprehensive women's basketball preview and today promised a story on Gonzaga. It's not up yet, but I suspect it will be soon, but not before I'm stuck with a paint brush in my hand. So keep checking the link and don't be afraid to leave a message and/or link when you see it up.
