Meyer re-signs with Spokane

Erik Meyer, who took over as Spokane’s starting quarterback after being acquired in a trade last season, has signed with the Shock, the Arena Football League team announced.

Meyer was highly productive in five games, completing 75 percent of his passes with 22 touchdowns and three interceptions. Spokane scored on 34 of Meyer’s 39 drives, but the former Eastern Washington University standout wasn’t able to stay healthy, missing portions of games with cramps, a concussion and finally a season-ending shoulder injury.

“There is no question that this is a QB-driven league and Erik is one of the best in the game,” Shock coach Andy Olson said. “He showed complete command of the offense last season. We expect him to continue to improve his game and assert himself as one of the best in the AFL.”

Spokanetraded for Meyer after the team suffered a series of injuries at the quarterback position. He eventually beat out Kyle Rowley and Bill Stull for the starting job, though Rowley returned to the starting role when Meyer was injured. Rowley and Stull are both with AFL Pittsburgh.

Meyer, 28, is the seventh player to return from last year’s roster and the 24th overall. Under the AFL’s new pay scale, Meyer will earn more than $1,600 per game if he’s the starting quarterback – four times more than every other player on the roster.
