Sun shines, morning post benefits

COUGARS

Another day, another morning post. The monotony of it all gets to me after a while. But all it takes to break the spell is a peek outside. The sun is shining, there's a bit of sparkling frost on the ground, and the view is exhilarating. OK, back to the post. Read on.

••••••••••

• Washington State: There has been a bit of negativity surrounding the football program after last week's loss to Oregon State (OK, what was the bigger understatement in that sentence, “a bit” or “loss?”). So I wanted to see what the players thought of it. That idea resulted in this story. … Made my Pac-12 picks yesterday and found myself doing some second-guessing. Uh oh, tightening up down the stretch. Classic choke mode. … I also had a short story on Jared Karstetter being named one of the finalists for the William Campbell award (a scholar/athlete award) and winning an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. I'm sure his parents had a great celebratory dinner last night. Dental school is expensive. Sorry, but couldn't find the story on line. … Freelancer Howie Stalwick has this piece on Sekope Kaufusi, who wasn't at practice yesterday though, because I was over at basketball, I'm not sure why. … Register-Guard columnist George Schroeder writes about Reuben Mayes and his Oregon connection. … This was up yesterday but I thought I would pass it along. It's Cougfan's piece on NFL scouts and their take on the WSU program.

• Around the Pac-12: It is Thursday, right? So no wonder everyone is making their picks. Jon Wilner has his, ESPN.com's Ted Miller has his and, well that's all we can find right now…. Miller also has what to watch. … Chris Dufresne has a college football notebook that starts with something unbelievable and ends with something unbelievable. Of course, both are about the BCS standings, so anything is possible. … Washington: The Huskies need to pass the ball and stop the Wildcats' passing game. … Oregon State: The Beavers feature another good freshman running back. … Oregon: No one in Eugene is probably as worried about WSU as they are with the saga of Cliff Harris. His recent actions have finally fed up some folks. They are also worried about their seats in the event the Ducks host the Pac-12 title game. … California: The Bears are in favor of an NCAA-mandated cash payment. … Stanford: This Cardinal team, built by union labor, is ready to win big games. … Colorado: Brian Lockridge is a lockdown corner off the field. … Utah: The Utes' coach is taking the blame for something that isn't all his fault. … The defense is starting to get stretched a bit thin. … USC: Matt Barkley is going to have to sing the right tunes this weekend. … UCLA: With all the suspended receivers, is it Jerry Rice, Jr.'s time? . … Arizona State: Though Omar Bolden is trying, there's no guarantee the cornerback will return this year. … Arizona: The Wildcats are still kicking themselves over one play in Seattle two years ago.

• That's what we have for now. We'll be back after Paul Wulff's press conference and practice today. Until later …
