Could WAC get plundered again?

Texas-San Antonio was set to join the WAC this summer. But the Roadrunners now appear headed to the Conference USA in 2013 -- along with current WAC member Louisiana Tech. And the WAC's losses might not end there. reported Saturday morning that Utah State and San Jose State are expected to move to the Mountain West Conference in 2013 as well.

Read on for more on what this means for Idaho and the WAC.

If these reports come to fruition, the WAC will lose four more football-playing members, after it lost Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii in the last two years.

Asked about the reported defections, Idaho athletic director Rob Spear in an email said, "We will comment if and when things become official."

The Vandals have been members of the WAC since 2005. They would no doubt love to join the Mountain West, but the MWC can afford to be choosy at this point. And it appears commissioner Craig Thompson favors Utah State and San Jose State.

The WAC currently has seven football-playing members for 2012 -- LTU, Idaho, New Mexico State, Texas State, UTSA, Utah State and San Jose State. By next year, it could be down to three.

Before Karl Benson left for the Sun Belt, he had hoped to add two more schools when announcing the addition of Texas-Arlington as a non-football-playing member. But now the WAC has an interim commissioner, Jeff Hurd, and the beleaguered conference is in further limbo.
