Spring ball means more snow

COUGARS

FROM PULLMAN — The sun came out and the sky was blue when the Cougars began spring football practice on Thursday. But the night ended with me scraping snow off my windshield. Yep, it's spring time on the Palouse. Read on for our coverage.

Everyone stayed dry — albeit a bit chilly — during practice. Later on? Not so much. Can't complain, though. The snow that fell in Pullman last night was the wet kind, and it was easily removed from the necessary surfaces. … For our story in today's newspaper, we wrote about the number of passes thrown by the quarterbacks — a lot — we well as various other first-day subjects. John Blanchette has a column about Mike Leach's up-tempo day passing with little fanfare. We also have a lengthy blog post with the rest of our notes from practice, as well as the athletic department's video of interviews with Leach, Connor Halliday, Jeff Tuel and Tyree Toomer. … Howie Stalwick has a story in the Kitsap Sun. … KING 5 was in town and put together this package. … KREM has this story. … A basketball note: there was no official update on the status of Brock Motum's ankle on Thursday.

Around the Pac-12 … Arizona is eyeing a former Duquesne guard. The state of Arizona State basketball is discussed here. … The Colorado quarterback competition isn't much of one. … Some Utah freshmen are getting a look at quarterback. Some brothers are looking bigger for the Utes. … A former linebacker is providing some size in USC's backfield. … Dana Altman says he's not leaving Oregon. … But will Jared Cunningham say the same for Oregon State? … Stanford's pro day for Andrew Luck and others was a bit of a circus. … BYU's offensive coordinator has confidence in Riley Nelson.

All for now.
