Leach leaves door open for Kaufusi return

COUGARS

FROM PULLMAN — We tuned into Mike Leach's interview with KJR 950 AM in Seattle today, and there were a few newsworthy items to come out of it. Including what Leach had to say about dismissed linebacker Sekope Kaufusi.

Kaufusi, as you know, was dismissed from the team early this month after being arrested for possession of marijuana. Leach was asked about some of the off-field troubles he dealt with, saying that there were a couple bad apples, but that one player in particular simply made a mistake that cost him dearly.

It was obvious he was referring to Kaufusi. But then co-host Jason Puckett asked Leach specifically about Kaufusi, and whether it was possible he could return to the team. Leach said, “I think it's possible. I don't know. I don't have a crystal ball on that,” but that any reinstatement would come after “an extended period of time.”

That's an interesting statement given Leach's zero-tolerance stance thus far. But his comments seemed to suggest that Kaufusi's mistake was viewed as a one-time thing.

Said Leach of the players he dismissed: “Two or three were 'keep an eye on' guys, and then one guy was just one of those deals, one of those things that happens with guys between 18 and 23 years old.”
