Mike Leach on Pac-12 coaches call

COUGARS

FROM PULLMAN -- Mike Leach made his weekly appearance on the Pac-12 coaches call this morning, and we have a recap of it below.

...

(On bouncing back from Colorado) "We had a good practice on Sunday. I thought that we just have poor effort in the fourth quarter. We have guys that a lot of times want to play when they’re ahead, get excited then, then all of a sudden it gets tough and we collapse. Part of it perhaps is we have a lot of young faces out there."

(On Kache Palacio) "We’ve got a lot of freshmen contributions out there, I think Palacio has done well. He’s kind of risen to the point where he’s in the starting rotation. He brings a lot of energy, brings a lot of enthusiasm, plays hard, has a good motor, is competitive. We need to polish his technique and get him sharper. I think a real credit to Palacio that he’s out there playing with some of the guys he is right now."

(On potentially using freshmen on the o-line) "We have two walk-ons on there starting for us so I think depth is an issue, but we just need to do the best we can. Gunnar Eklund I guess is a freshman."

(On Andrei Lintz) "We’re just not getting some of the same things that we were in spring in practice. Then I think we’ve had some other guys emerge that have gone out and performed better in games. Brett Bartolone’s gone out and played well and then some other guys."

(On freshmen coming in ready to compete at receiver) "I think one reason is the passing leagues they have around the country. More schools more often have them. ... I felt like going into this week Gabe Marks and Isiah Myers are probably our two best receivers … try to shuffle some guys around to get him more reps out there on the field."

(Recruiting strategy this year) "A lot of  them overall, in particular offense line and defensive line."
