Idaho’s Madison, Rehkow honored

For the second time in the first month of the season, Idaho small forward Stephen Madison has been named WAC Player of the Week. And he wasn't the only Vandal feted on Monday -- freshman kicker/punter Austin Rehkow hauled in a national award for FBS independent schools after he capped a remarkable freshman season with a big day on Saturday in a loss to New Mexico State.

All the details are below.

Rehkow, a Spokane Valley native, was honored as the Special Teams Player of the Week for the FBS independent schools. He leads the nation in punting average (47.8 yards), a mark that set the Idaho single-season record held by T.J. Conley in 2008. Conley averaged 47.8 yards per punt.

On Saturday, Rehkow converted all three of his field goal attempts (25, 25 and 27 yards) and his lone PAT attempt in Idaho’s game at New Mexico State. He also punted four times for a 48.2-yard average, including a long of 65 yards.

The Vandals finished their season at 1-11 after falling 24-16 to NMSU.

Madison earned his second WAC weekly honor of the season after averaging 20.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game in two games last week. He scored a season-high 26 points at Boise State and knocked down 9-of-16 shots while adding eight rebounds.

In Idaho’s comeback victory at UC Davis, in which the Vandals trailed by as many as 15 points, Madison scored 15 points to go along with career highs of 16 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks. Madison shot 41.7 percent from the field (15-of-36) and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line for the week.

Madison also earned the honor on Nov. 11 after Idaho’s season-opening win over Western Illinois.

The Vandals (4-4) hosts Washington State on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will televised on SWX.
