Tale of the tape: Arizona 73, WSU 56

COUGARS

FROM PHOENIX -- We've filed our game story and are now seated in Terminal 4 at the Phoenix airport, awaiting a 9 p.m. flight back to chilly Spokane. Here's our tale of the tape. Read on.

...

PLAYER OF THE GAME -- Brock Motum looked more like the player he was earlier this season, attacking the rim, drawing fouls, finishing and getting to the free throw line (though he would have liked to make more of them, obviously). He finished with 20 points and helped make the score more respectable in the second half. But Kevin Parrom was the most important player on the court, hitting five 3s -- including makes on three consecutive possessions in the second half -- as part of Arizona's lights-out shooting effort.

PLAY OF THE GAME -- It's hard to say whether the Cougars would have ever really had a shot to make Arizona sweat, but they did have a couple chances to trim the lead to single-digits. Bryce Leavitt could have cut it to nine when he missed a contested layup on a fast break, but he missed, Arizona rebounded, and Parrom made a 3 on the other end. That felt like a pretty decisive swing.

STAT OF THE GAME -- A few stand out. Many WSU fans will lament the Cougars' 14-for-28 performance at the free-throw line, and that certainly didn't help. But Arizona shot 55.6 percent from the field, 50 percent from 3 (11-22) and assisted on 19 of its 25 field goals. Those are gaudy offensive numbers. Not going to lose many games when you shoot that well and share the ball at that kind of clip.

QUOTABLE -- "We did the same thing at ASU. That’s one thing this team does. They’re not quitting. They keep fighting, they keep battling. It’d be great to have another player like Mike Ladd back out there, but unfortunately right now he’s hurt. So we’ve got to go with what we’ve got, and to our guys’ credit, the ones who are suiting up, they’re trying as hard as they can." -- coach Ken Bone

UP NEXT -- A long break this week before a 12:30 p.m. game next Sunday at Washington. The Huskies play Arizona State tonight at 7 p.m.
