FROM PULLMAN — The new year also signals the beginning of Pac-12 play, with Washington State playing is conference opener against Washington on Saturday. We can't find anything of note to link on the WSU front. … Stanford stood tall for the Pac-12 yesterday, defeating Wisconsin, 20-14, in the Rose Bowl. If Oregon can beat Kansas State in the Fiest Bowl, the conference will finish with a 4-4 bowl record. … USC's coach needs to look in the mirror when assessing what went wrong with the Trojans' season. … Oregon is defined by its ability to live in the moment, a trait that will be challenged this week with Chip Kelly rumors swirling.

In Pac-12 basketball news … A few Pac-12 previews as league play begins. … Utah has a tall task in its Pac-12 opener against Arizona State tonight (7 p.m., Pac-12 Networks). The game will feature a battle of brothers. … Kevin Parrom has found his niche as Arizona's sixth man. … California picked up a commitment from a notable name. … Colorado's top player says he won't make a decision on his NBA future anytime soon.
