Kyle Wiltjer took his time making a decision on whether to remain at Kentucky or transfer to Gonzaga. After a month of contemplating, the 6-foot-10 forward decided to join GU's program.
He will sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules and then have two years of eligibility. Here's a link to my article that will run in Saturday's S-R and another that recaps Wiltjer's Kentucky years in the Lexington newspaper.
Wiltjer was in the middle of packing and getting his car repaired, but took time to discuss his decision with me in a phone call earlier this afternoon.
“Gonzaga recruited me the first time around (as a senior at Jesuit High in Portland), and they were definitely one of my top schools,” he said. “The reason I started with them in this process is because they were close the first time.”
He spoke highly of both programs and how hard it was deciding to leave Kentucky. He came across as a down-to-earth kid, facing issues that every college student encounters. He said his family thought about having his car shipped back to the West Coast but it was too expensive. So, he'll be making a long drive west in a few days.
