Spring starts today at WSU

COUGARS

FROM SALT LAKE CITY — Maybe it doesn't quite feel like it outside. Or maybe it does. I'm not in Pullman. In any event, it's spring, especially because Washington State begins spring football practices today at Martin Stadium (and, too, on what's left of Rogers Field). Read on.

Spent most of yesterday working on NCAA-tournament-related content, but you'll have to click over to Jim Meehan's blog post to read all of that. … We have a story in today's newspaper previewing WSU's spring practices, focusing on the quarterback battle and touching on what could be a much deeper battle across the offensive line. On the blog, we posted the athletic department's video of Leach's press conference, as well as a post with WSU's spring roster. … The Pac-12 blog writes about Deone Bucannon and his readiness to lead. … Here's the AP preview. … CougCenter takes a look at how the future of WSU's basketball program might look if Ken Bone is retained as coach.

Around the Pac-12 … There was a game played last night involving a Pac-12 basketball team, in case you missed it. Arizona State won at Detroit in the first round of the NIT. … There are three much bigger games involving Pac-12 teams today. California aims to limit UNLV freshman Anthony Bennett in its first-round NCAA game (4:27 p.m., TRU TV). … Arizona has to be defense-minded in its tourney opener against Belmont (4:20 p.m., TNT). … E.J. Singler finally gets his shot at college basketball's biggest stage as the No. 12 seed Ducks gun for an upset — however mild — over No. 5 Oklahoma State (1:40 p.m., TNT). … Colorado has another day before its tourney opener against Illinois. … UCLA's point guard has really made things go this season. Norman Powell has stepped up, too. … Might Salt Lake be the best place to look for a new coach this weekend?

That's all for now. If you're interested in Gonzaga basketball coverage, I'll be tweeting throughout today from Salt Lake and will also host a live chat during Gonzaga's game against Southern at 1:40 p.m. The chat will go live about 30 minutes prior to the game and run through its conclusion.
