Football-basketball double-dip for Idaho

The Idaho football team plays its final home game this afternoon (vs. Old Dominion at 2 p.m.), just as the Idaho men's basketball team begins its season with a home game (vs. Western Illinois at 7 p.m.).

We have quick previews of both games below.

*****

Football: Old Dominion at Idaho

Kickoff: 2 p.m.; Kibbie Dome, Moscow, Idaho

Records: ODU 6-3; UI 1-8

Radio: 1080/1280-AM

Overview: There are only six FBS independents in the nation, and two of them will meet this afternoon in the Kibbie Dome. Idaho has lost four straight since topping Temple at home on Sept. 28. With a win today, it will go into 2014 with the momentum at home that coach Paul Petrino has stressed over the last few weeks. The Vandals will honor 17 seniors before the game, including quarterback Taylor Davis, who is likely to start for the third straight week. The Monarchs, who will join Conference USA next year, are 0-3 against FBS teams. They've scored at least 59 points in four games against FCS foes – including 66 last week in an easy win over Rhode Island.

Line: Old Dominion by 14 points

Basketball: Idaho vs. Western Illinois

MOSCOW, Idaho – The first eight weeks of the season are likely to be a feeling-out period for the reconstructed Idaho men's basketball team.

Tonight offers the first – and one of only a few – chances for Vandals fans to see the team play at home. Idaho opens the season against Western Illinois at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gym, just one of four games before the end of the calendar year that UI will play in Moscow.

The game will cap a football-basketball doubleheader on the Idaho campus. The Vandals close their 2013 home football slate by hosting Old Dominion at 2 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome.

The Vandals' basketball team, which features 12 first-year players, plays 10 times on the road before Dec. 31. That includes games in Boise against Boise State and Idaho State and Wednesday's trip to Oklahoma to take part in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Western Illinois, a member of the Summit League, returns six players from last season's 22-win team. The Leathernecks and Vandals have never met.
