Live WSU chat

Full text of Live Chat on Washington State football and basketball.

12:48 PM

srchat: Thanks for joining our live chat. I'll be in at 1 p.m. to answer WSU football and basketball questions.

12:59 PM

srchat: Alright, let's get started. Have any WSU questions?

1:04 PM

Guest5034 (guest): Any word on when the DC will be hired and who is on the list? Any concern about losing recruits?

1:04 PM

Guest5332 (guest): Any update or snippets to give regarding our DC search? Thought we'd have our man by now.

1:04 PM

Guest2884 (guest): who is in the lead for defense coordinaor

1:05 PM

srchat: Haven't heard much since our last update:

http://www.spokesman.com/blogs/sportslink/2014/dec/04/who-standing-out-wsus-defensive-coordinator-search/

Who is standing out in WSU's defensive coordinator search? - SportsLink - Spokesman.com - Dec. 4, 2014

1:06 PM

srchat: But I did think it was interesting that Bruce Feldman, who wrote Swing Your Sword with Mike Leach, wrote an article yesterday about Clancy Pendergast, the only candidate we listed in both of our lists of possible coordinators.

1:06 PM

srchat: Could Feldman be hinting/foreshadowing WSU's hire?

1:07 PM

Guest5034 (guest): I was hoping Bruce feldman's article about Clancy pendergrast was indicative of something to come.

1:07 PM

srchat: It seems we're of the same mind.

1:07 PM

Jonthecoug: Who do you see taking control of the point guard role? Or will it be done by committee?

1:07 PM

srchat: It seems like Kent is ready to turn the keys over to Ny Redding in that regard. However, Trevor Dunbar has a tight handle and could see time against pressure/trap defenses.

1:09 PM

Jonthecoug: When does this series return to Pullman? I hope Moos doesn't agree to this format again.

1:09 PM

srchat: Next season Gonzaga will play at WSU.

1:10 PM

Cougs365 (guest): Any news on Tim Settle? Would be a huge get for Wazzu

1:11 PM

srchat: Looks like he's visiting Louisville this weekend.

1:13 PM

Jonthecoug: I don't see many conference wins this year. What do you think it would take for Ernie to consider this season a success?

1:15 PM

srchat: For Kent I think success will be determined by competitiveness and how confident the team emerges after the season, if there is still plenty of "buy-in" and if the young guys are playing well. If the Cougars can remain competitive, knock off some decent teams at home and steal a couple on the road it will be a successful season.

1:16 PM

Guest5332 (guest): any update on austin joyner?

1:18 PM

srchat: He's understandably unsure of what he'll do in the aftermath of the Breske dismissal but he' still going to take a visit to WSU. Obviously, what sort of relationship the new defensive coordinator can form with him will play a large role in his eventual decision.

1:18 PM

Jonthecoug: Do you think Leach is waiting on an announcement of the DC until all of the assistants are hired?

1:19 PM

srchat: No, I think as soon as they have a guy and can agree on a contract they'll want to make an announcement so that he can begin recruiting. That being said, I could see assistant positions being something that prolongs the negotiations.

1:24 PM

Guest407 (guest): Any thoughts on Hamza Abdullah's Twitter activity yesterday?

1:25 PM

srchat: He obviously cares a lot about the school and the program and thinks former players should be more involved.Maybe in the future we'll see more of Abdullah around in a role with the program, which would be cool.

1:25 PM

Guest9198 (guest): Any idea why Darryl Monroe left?

1:27 PM

srchat: I spoke with his father a bit and while I don't want to put them in an awkward position I'll say that I think he and his family did not like the way WSU handled an injury issue. One of the dangers of not talking about injuries is that you limit yourself from acknowledging that a player is struggling because he's playing in pain.

1:27 PM

Guest5034 (guest): Are you surprised it has taken this long to hire the DC with it being a somewhat critical recruiting period?

1:28 PM

srchat: It's also a pretty critical position and I don't think you'd want to rush through it. A lot of the good candidates are probably preparing for bowl games, and making the right hire is going to help with recruiting more than making a quick hire.

1:28 PM

shurtyj (guest): If Pendergrast was the choice, what's the hold up?

1:28 PM

srchat: No idea if he's the choice, but if he was it could be anything from salary negotiations, seeing if other jobs open up, weighing various offers, etc.

1:30 PM

Guest5332 (guest): what is leach's cell#? i know a guy

1:30 PM

srchat: There. I gave you one number.

1:31 PM

Guest9198 (guest): Maybe there's a story there for you to write, i.e., how college football teams handle players injuries.WSU has had a change in head athletic trainer since Leach arrived. Kristof Williams was also treated poorly.

1:32 PM

srchat: We've covered those topics a bit but if we can get firm facts that are important, rather than opinions, we'll of course report them.

1:34 PM

Guest9198 (guest): Good, don't want any more Rolling Stone coverage!

1:34 PM

WazzusJobu: Did you see the salary of assistance. WSU is near last in the Pac-12, while Leach is around 4th, has Moos indicated anything on assistance pay?

1:35 PM

srchat: I asked him the other day when we were speaking in prep for this story (http://bit.ly/1qc1RBY). My impression is that for the right candidate he's willing to increase the budget a little, but it won't be a massive increase to land someone.

Moos says WSU football “still in the process” of building - Spokesman.com - Dec. 7, 2014

1:38 PM

BKRansford: What'd you have for lunch?

1:38 PM

srchat: Just got back from some interviews and haven't eaten yet. Any suggestions?

1:40 PM

BKRansford: Well, I had a roast beef sandwich, but it was poorly constructed and lacked mustard. Really regretting it. I think a burrito sounds good.

1:40 PM

bellevuecoug: Don't eat, go for a run instead.

1:40 PM

srchat: Gonna be hard to reconcile those two suggestions. The last time I ran with a burrito it didn't end well.

1:42 PM

Guest5418 (guest): You are around the program a lot, who do you feel would be the best DC for us?

1:43 PM

srchat: The fact that Todd Orlando has built defenses that are great against the run and great against the pass tells me he'd be able to adapt to personnel and combat the Pac-12's various explosive offenses. Pendergast obviously has a great pedigree as well.

1:43 PM

WazzusJobu: Will Santa let Few off work early to coach tonight?

1:43 PM

srchat: I'm surprised you didn't say "Satan"

1:44 PM

Guest5211 (guest): What is the latest you expect a DC hire?

1:44 PM

srchat: I'd certainly expect a hire in December.

1:44 PM

bellevuecoug: Seems like anyone besides Pendergast or Orlando would be disappointment.

1:44 PM

Guest4723 (guest): I'd much rather have Barry Odom than Orlando.

1:45 PM

srchat: Oh, I don't know that that's true. There are a lot of good candidates out there that we haven't been mentioning. Those are just two of the names I've been hearing the most in talking to people who are tapped into the whole coaching carousel thing.

1:46 PM

WazzusJobu: Any NFL names for the DC you might be hearing?

1:47 PM

srchat: Pendergast was the DC for the Cardinals and the Chiefs. But he's about it. Any current NFL guys are going to be busy for awhile, or if they were going to leave early it's doubtful we'd hear about it.

1:47 PM

bellevuecoug: Breske was one of those gamble hires that fans questioned at the time - IMO, we need a proven FBS guy here.

1:48 PM

srchat: I think you always want that, but those guys don't grow on trees. Actually, neither do NAIA coaches, D2 coaches or really any humans.

1:48 PM

Guest4723 (guest): Jason Tarver will be out of a job soon. He was the coDC with Derek Mason at Stanford.

1:49 PM

Guest5418 (guest): Are you hearing Ed Orgeron to Nebraska?Seems like a great hire

1:49 PM

srchat: That's been the chatter since about 15 minutes after Riley took the job. It seems like not only a great hire but a great fit. Coach O can get the recruiting rolling at Nebraska and keep that strong defensive Husker mindset and allow Riley to focus on running the program.

1:50 PM

WazzusJobu: WSU getting 22 tonight, take the cover?

1:50 PM

srchat: I think the Cougars will score. I just think Gonzaga will score more.

1:53 PM

bellevuecoug: "More", in this context, meaning twice as much . . .

1:53 PM

srchat: We'll see. If they can stay hot from the UTSA game it could be closer than you think.

1:54 PM

Guest407 (guest): Any guesses for the Oregon State head coach?

1:55 PM

srchat: Beau Baldwin would be a good hire. I saw John Canzano lobbying for Pat Hill but I'd be a little surprised.

1:56 PM

Guest5211 (guest): I am watching the OSU live stream hoping they would already have a design for new athletics complex that I could see...they don't

1:56 PM

srchat: That's too bad. The OxBlue stuff is great.

1:57 PM

rharkins63: Just curious how nothing ever leaks regarding hires in the athletic department. How do they manage to keep everything so quiet? Not even a rumored interview or phone call.

1:58 PM

srchat: Well, they've established a pretty locked down environment and when you do that it becomes a lot easier to find out who's talking, which makes people less likely to talk.

1:58 PM

srchat: Hey everyone, one last thing before I sign off. I know this chat service cuts off most of the chat when you scroll up and believe me it's as annoying to me as it is to you. But we've figured out a way to post the transcript so check back later and we'll have everything from today's chat available. Thanks again for joining us and enjoy tonight's game.
