Mike Leach says Luke Falk should have won Heisman in 2015

Mike Leach is unsure what the current criteria is for Heisman Trophy selection. But he knows which player elevated his teammates the most in 2015. Leach spoke at Pac-12 Media Days, which quarterback Luke Falk did not attend (Gabe Marks represented the WSU offense) but where he was a frequent topic of discussion.

“Well, I’ve kind of lost track of what the Heisman is,” Leach said. “There was a time when the Heisman went to the guy who had the biggest impact and effect on their team, and if that was the case, he probably would have won it last year or should have.”

Falk completed 69.4 percent of his passes in 12 starts last season, throwing for 4,561 yards and 38 touchdowns while leading the Cougars to a 9-3 record, a six-win improvement over the previous season. While Falk’s accomplishments did garner some attention as a darkhorse Heisman candidate in the middle of the season, he did not receive any Heisman votes. Alabama running back Derrick Henry took home college football’s most prestigious trophy, with Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson joining him as finalists.

Leach also proposed a solution to his Heisman problem.

“So really I think they either need to have two awards or they need to define it,” Leach said. “Either you’re giving it to the guy that’s got the biggest impact on their particular team or it’s the MVP for the team that wins the National Championship. If that’s the case, they need to hand it out at the end of the National Championship along with the other hardware.”
