Gonzaga junior forward Kelly Olynyk has been named WCC player of the year, the conference announced Tuesday.

Olynyk, who is averaging 19.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in conference, becomes the 11th Gonzaga player to be selected WCC player of the year.

Mark Few was named WCC coach of the year for the ninth time in his career.

Senior Mike Hart was selected defensive player of the year. Pepperdine freshman Stacy Davis was named newcomer of the year.

Here's the WCC release. We'll have more on the blog and twitter later today

Sacre, Harris, Pangos, Bell honored by WCC

The conference office just released its All-WCC team and the four individual awards and Gonzaga was well represented on both.

Senior center Robert Sacre was named Defensive Player of the Year and freshman guard Kevin Pangos was voted Newcomer of the Year. Saint Mary's guard Matthew Dellavedova was selected Player of the Year and Loyola Marymount's Max Good was Coach of the Year.

Sacre, Pangos and Elias Harris made the 10-player All-WCC team. GU's Gary Bell Jr. joined Pangos on the five-member All-Freshman team.

The teams and awards are voted on by the WCC's nine head coaches.

All-WCC teams/awards listed below. More here later.

Zags favored to win another WCC title

OK, this is a little different — blogging from the parking lot at the MAC. I've got about five minutes before I go interview Rob Sacre for the cover story of the S-R's special college basketball section that will run in about 10 days.

So, here's the news of the day from the WCC's tip-off event at Youtube headquarters in San Bruno, Calif. GU is the preseason pick to win another conference title and Sacre and Elias Harris were selected to the preseason All-WCC team.

UPDATE: Here's a link to the short article I put together on GU being favored in the preseason poll and a bit on tomorrow's exhibition game against Carroll College. It appears junior forward Kelly Olynyk won't play tomorrow. He suffered a concussion last week and still hasn't been cleared to practice.

More below.

Five Bulldogs earn All-WCC honors

As mentioned in a previous post, Gonzaga had five players (Steven Gray, Rob Sacre, Elias Harris, Marquise Carter and Sam Dower) honored when the All-WCC teams/individual awards were announced Tuesday.

Here's a link to my article that will run in Wednesday's S-R. (Carter and Dower are pictured above.)

More from the conference office and GU sports information.

Bouldin named WCC player of year

Gonzaga senior guard Matt Bouldin was named the WCC player of the year, the league announced Monday afternoon.

GU’s Elias Harris was selected freshman of the year and Mark Few was chosen coach of the year. Saint Mary’s center Omar Samhan was voted defensive player of the year.

Bouldin, Harris and Steven Gray were first-team All-WCC selections. Bouldin has been on the first team the last three seasons. The rest of the first team: Portland’s T.J. Campbell and Robin Smeulders; San Francisco’s Dior Lowhorn; Saint Mary’s Mickey McConnell and Samhan; and Loyola Marymount’s Vernon Teel and Drew Viney.

Bouldin, the versatile 6-5 guard from Highlands Ranch, Colo., is averaging a career-high 16 points and 4.1 assists per game this season.

Joining Harris on the All-freshman team: Saint Mary’s Matthew Dellavedova, LMU’s Ashley Hamilton, San Diego’s Chris Manresa and Santa Clara’s Robert Smith.

Check back later for an expanded article on the All-WCC awards and a feature story on GU’s upcoming Senior Night.
