Spring Practice Report: Day 7

From Pullman — Washington State finally put on full pads on Thursday. The coaches put on headsets and officials were in uniform. The reason for the extra accoutrements? The Cougars had their first live-tackling session of spring. More on that after the jump.

Spring Practice Report: Day 3

From Pullman — The pads went on Tuesday’s and the Washington State football team had easily its most spirited practice of the spring. There was constant hollering from the sidelines, a few light scuffles broke out and the coaches didn’t seem to mind a bit.

Our practice report is after the jump.

Spring practice day 2: notes and quotes

From Pullman — The Cougars were up early Saturday morning for their second practice of spring football. Here is our practice report and a story on the offensive line. More notes and quotes from practice after the jump.

Colorado State coach suspended for two weeks

Early in Saturday's New Mexico Bowl, Colorado State defensive line coach Greg Lupfer launched a tirade (scroll down) at Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday. It appeared during the replay that one of his profanities was a gay slur. Today, the school decided to suspend Lupfer for two weeks without pay and mandated that he undergo anger management and diversity training.

“I accept these consequences—two weeks without pay and the training programs—and I am thankful for this second chance to continue coaching at Colorado State and be a part of the Ram Family,” Lupfer said in a statement released by CSU. “I am deeply sorry for my behavior, which does not represent who I am or my values. I embrace the opportunity to participate in anger management and diversity sensitivity training. I was angry and careless with my words, and my words hurt many people. I sincerely apologize to the GLBTQ community for causing pain by using a slur without considering its meaning. I take ownership of my words and fully understand why people are very upset.”

Unit Grades: New Mexico Bowl

From Phoenix Airport — It's that time again. Time to take an analytical eye and breakdown the performance of WSU's individual units in the New Mexico Bowl. While there were lots of impressive individual statistics for the Cougars, to give great grades after a 48-45 loss would make me guilty of worse grade inflation than Griffin Elementary School.

Sunday morning Pac-12 links

From Tucson — It was a Saturday of significance in the Pac-12 and almost every game seemed to possess extra importance. Colorado ended a long slump, Arizona State moved within one win of locking up the Pac-12 South, USC shook up the balance of power in the Pac-12 and may have found its new coach and the Washington State Cougars won their fifth game for the first time since 2007 …  Here's how they scored … Our notebook from the game … And our keys to the game … Further down on SportsLink we have postgame videos of coach Mike Leach, quarterback Connor Halliday and more … The football team weren't the only winners on Saturday. The men's basketball team beat Lamar and improved to 2-0 on the season … It wasn't all good news for WSU sports, however, as the women's soccer team fell to Illinois in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Unit Grades: OSU

Having now watched the Pac-12 Network’s replay of the game (and having attended, of course) I’d like to introduce this new feature to the blog. The hope is that by analyzing individual position groups we can get a better idea of what this WSU team really looks like. What are the team’s strengths, who is getting better and who is mired in a slump?

Without further adieu, grades after the jump.

Morning after links

Oregon State used a 35-0 run to put the Cougars to bed last night, here's our story from the game … And here's the notebook … Josh Wright joined us in the press box and has an excellent sidebar on OSU receiver Brandin Cooks …

But there were other games played on Saturday, too. Read on for links from around the conference.

WSU’s Historic Day

While we fight through some technical difficulties to bring you the postgame video interviews (don't worry, they're coming), let's look at some numbers to help put WSU's 44-22 victory over the Golden Bears in perspective. Quarterback Connor Halliday wasn't the only Cougar to put up big numbers, althoug his were certainly the biggest. Check out these statistics compiled by WSU's Bobby Alworth, after the jump.
