Dayton hands Gonzaga its first loss

It was all going so smoothly for Gonzaga, leading 34-18 late in the first half. Sam Dower Jr. was dominating inside, Przemek Karnowski was doing his part and GU's zone slowed Dayton's offense to a crawl. The Flyers missed 3 after 3 until Jordan Sibert connected with 32 seconds remaining in the half.

From that point on, Dayton took it to the Zags, The Flyers put up 56 points in the second half, holding off a late Gonzaga comeback to upset the Bulldogs 84-79 on Monday night at the Maui Invitational.

Here's my game story. I'll have a day-after post in the a.m. but it'll be an abbreviated one. Tight deadline on this game, leaving just a few minutes for post-game interviews.

Dayton first up for Zags

This could end up being the toughest three-game stretch of the season for Gonzaga, which faces a tough, guard-oriented opponent in Dayton tonight and the possibility of two ranked teams, including No. 9 Syracuse, the next two games. The Zags have road dates ahead against West Virginia, Kansas State (in Wichita) and No. 11 Memphis, but the sequence of games before and after probably won't match up with Maui, provided the Zags stay in the winner's bracket.

Here's my look at tonight's matchup. Analysts weigh in on Maui here.

By the way, in Sunday's article on Adam Morrison looking back at that magical 43-point night against Michigan State I mentioned ESPN had put together the five greatest moments in the tournament's history. Here's a link that shows the variety of ways Morrison put the ball in the basket (pull-ups, 3s, mid-range, power move, foul-drawing leaner from the baseline, transition and a nifty jump-hook from just inside the free-throw line). Zags draw Dayton for Maui opener

Gonzaga will open the Maui Invitational against Dayton.

Brackets for the November tournament were released Wednesday. The Zags and Flyers collide at 9 p.m. Pacific (the time is listed incorrectly in the release) on Nov. 25th on ESPN2. Baylor faces Chaminade in the other half of the bracket. In other first-round games, Cal meets Arkansas and Syracuse faces Minnesota.

In opening games prior to those eight teams traveling to Maui, Gonzaga will entertain Oakland University (Rochester, Minn.) on Nov. 17 at the MAC.
