AFL announces division, conference alignments

I’ll have a bit more on this in the next hour or so, but the AFL has issued a press release that finalizes the division and conference alignments for the 2011 season.

Spokane, as expected, will remain in the West Division with Utah, Arizona and San Jose, one of four new AFL members. The Shock also remain in the National Conference.

There will be 18 teams in 2011 — the four newcomers are San Jose, Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia; the one contraction (Oklahoma City). Again, no surprises there.

More here.

Shock learn divisional alignment

Spokane is one of three teams in the National Conference West Division. The Shock are joined by Utah and Arizona. Chicago, Cleveland, Iowa and Milwaukee form the National Conference Midwest Division.

It’s believed that the National Conference and American Conference champions will have first-round byes in the playoffs. The playoff format hasn’t been officially announced and AF1 also hasn’t made a decision on the name or site of its title game.

Here’s the AF1 release on the divisions.
