Bell receives medical clearance

Gonzaga's roster is complete again with the return of guard Gary Bell Jr.

It's been a while since the Zags have had their entire roster available. Bell, who broke his right hand on Dec. 28, was out for nearly four weeks and he missed six games. He's expected to play against San Diego on Thursday. GU has also dealt with forward Sam Dower Jr.'s back injury, suffered Kansas State on Dec. 21. Dower missed two games. Guard Kevin Pangos has been bothered by a turf toe injury since early December but hasn't missed a game.

More below on Bell, the Toreros and a couple of USD players who played high school basketball in Spokane.

Bell nearing return

Media day earlier this afternoon and Gary Bell Jr.'s status for this week's games was the first item in my notebook that will run in Wednesday's S-R.

Bell, who broke his right hand Dec. 28, hopes to play against San Diego on Thursday and BYU on Saturday but he needs medical clearance. The next step in that process is an appointment Wednesday for his weekly X-ray. Bell has missed roughly 3 & 1/2 weeks. Saturday will be the 4-week point. When Bell was diagnosed with a broken right hand, he was expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Bell, Lacy meet again

The paths of Gonzaga's Gary Bell Jr. and Washington State's DaVonte Lacy's have crossed numerous times before. They've been foes, teammates and roommates, and along the way they've become friends.

That friendship will take a couple hours off Thursday night when GU entertains WSU at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Here's a feature I put together on Bell and Lacy that run in Thursday's S-R.

Zags await practice opener

Gonzaga and area D-I schools can begin practicing as early as today (Saturday in GU's case) so we put together a short preview for Friday's S-R.

Under a new NCAA rule, teams have 42 days before their season opener to conduct 30 practices. Teams can spread out practices more or they can stick to essentially the same schedule they've used for years. GU will experiment to determine the best approach but it seems, considering their strong starts in recent seasons, they might not want to mess with success too much.

A bit more below.

A bit more on Bell

Back with a slightly expanded article on Gary Bell Jr., who committed to Gonzaga on Monday. I wasn’t able to get in touch with Gary or his prep coach. If that changes, I’ll post their thoughts tomorrow.

Meanwhile, read on for the unedited article that will run in Tuesday’s S-R.
