Shock still facing uphill playoff climb

Spokane is playing some of its best football of the season and would be a dangerous team if it makes the playoffs. That's a big 'IF'. More on Spokane's playoff chase, the return of Jeremy Geathers and details on the new 5-year CBA here.

There's a longer version below with a few more quotes and an update on DB Terrance Sanders that were cut from the article that ran in today's S-R.

Geathers back for one game

Turns out defensive lineman Jeremy Geathers will wear a Spokane Shock jersey at least one more time.

Geathers will return, likely for just one game, when Spokane visits Jacksonville on Saturday, before resuming preparations for training camp with the CFL B.C. Lions.

Spokane planned on Brandon Sharpe replacing Geathers in the lineup, but Sharpe suffered an injury earlier this week. Shock officials phoned Geathers, who agreed to play Saturday. Geathers, who had six sacks in five games, will probably be placed on Other League Exempt next week.

In other moves, offensive lineman Andrew Roxas, who played at Washington State, was released and defensive back Patrick Stoudamire was placed on injured reserve. Spokane signed former Washington Husky DB Vonzell McDowell earlier this week.

Geathers returns to Shock

Jeremy Geathers, a defensive end who played a key role in Spokane's 2010 AFL championship run, has signed with the Shock. Geathers was the defensive player of the game after registering two sacks in Spokane's 69-57 win over Tampa Bay in the ArenaBowl.

He went on to play for CFL B.C., but was injured early in the 2010 season. Spokane attempted to sign Geathers last season after trading DE Khreem Smith to Utah, but Geathers opted to join AFL Chicago, where he had one sack in five games.

Spokane also signed OL Sifa Etu, who is a former teammate of Shock WR Brandon Thompkins at Arkansas State.

More here.

Shock release Hansen, still looking for DL

Spokane cut quarterback Casey Hansen, who started the last two games after injuries to Bill Stull and Kyle Rowley. Erik Meyer, acquired in a trade earlier this week, is expected to start next Friday (June 10th) against Philadelphia.

Also, one of the free-agent targets Spokane was looking at — ex-Shock DL Jeremy Geathers — signed with Chicago. By the way, Cleveland has signed ex-Shock QB Andrico Hines.

Here's a recap of Shock-related news.

Geathers signs with CFL team

Defensive lineman Jeremy Geathers has become the third Shock player to sign with an outdoor league since Spokane thumped Tampa Bay in ArenaBowl XXIII on Aug. 20.
