Gonzaga drops third in a row

Gonzaga had two shots at the winning basket, but Matt Bouldin’s bank shot from 10 feet was too hard and Austin Daye couldn’t connect on the putback as the 16th-ranked Bulldogs lost 66-65 to Utah on Wednesday in Salt Lake City.

Gonzaga has lost three straight and four of five. The Bulldogs dropped to 8-4. Utah improved to 8-5.

Zags tumble in polls

A couple of weeks ago, Gonzaga was undefeated and ranked No. 4. Following a loss to No. 2 UConn on Dec. 20th in Seattle, the Zags actually went up one spot in the A.P. poll, from 8th to 7th.

But a home loss to Portland State last Tuesday — Gonzaga’s third loss in four games — sent the Bulldogs sliding down the rankings. GU is 16th in A.P. and 17th in ESPN/USA Today. More here.

The Bulldogs returned to practice Saturday in preparation for a New Year’s Eve road game against Utah. After Utah, the Bulldogs visit Tennessee on Jan. 7, a rematch of GU’s 83-74 victory in the Old Spice Classic championship Nov. 30. Tennessee is ranked 14th by A.P and tied for 18th by ESPN/USA Today.

Game still on, more notes

Despite the record snowfall and GU canceling classes today, the Gonzaga-Texas Southern game is still on for 6 p.m. The Tigers arrived at 1:30 Wednesday morning, according to coach Tony Harvey, whom I met in the lobby of the MAC on Wednesday afternoon while many of his players gazed at the snow falling outside the windows.
