Bulldogs hold off LMU, 82-72

Good evening from Los Angeles. Haven't seen a cloud in three days but I did witness two interesting basketball games. GU worked over Pepperdine on Thursday, but Saturday wasn't as easy against a short-handed Loyola Marymount squad. The Zags had to work from start to finish to secure an 82-72 win at Gersten Pavilion.

Sam Dower finished with a career-high 28 points — surpassing 1,000 career points at GU — and 14 rebounds. Known for his soft shooting touch, Dower couldn't buy a basket at times as his attempts from close range trickled off the iron, but he got plenty of opportunities and made several crucial baskets in the closing minutes.

My unedited game story is below. Check back for my day-after post in the morning.

Zags return to road in WCC

Game day is approaching for Gonzaga, which visits Loyola Marymount on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Here's my preview of the Bulldogs-Lions, a glance at the game and a couple of notes that will run on our Four Corners college basketball page in Thursday's S-R.

 More below.

Golden sparkles in Gonzaga women’s win over LMU

Stephanie Golden had a career-high 15 points and the No. 22 Gonzaga women's basketball team earned a 79-61 win over Loyola Marymount at the McCarthey Athletic Center on Thursday night. As you'll see in my story, I overheard a fan throw out a horrendously obvious pun after the game. I'd like to thank that fan. After he said it, I couldn't get it out of my head. Hence, the first couple paragraphs.

Oh well.

Gonzaga rolls past LMU

Gonzaga took control early, led by 30 barely a minute into the second half and cruised to a 93-60 West Coast Conference victory over Loyola Marymount on Saturday at Gersten Pavilion.

The 23rd-ranked Bulldogs, winners of six straight, improved to 14-4, 5-0 in the WCC. LMU dropped to 1-20, 0-5.

Check back for an expanded game story in about 60 minutes.

Zags face 1-19 Lions

Game day for Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount at Gersten Pavilion. Here’s a short preview that ran in Saturday’s S-R and here’s a link to the S-R’s Zags photos, which includes Pepperdine and previous games (might want to save the address). One more piece of reading material: A feature on Diamon Simpson and Omar Samhan of Saint Mary’s, which visits GU on Thursday.

According to America’s Line in today’s S-R, Gonzaga is the biggest favorite (26.5 points) on a list of 90 college games. There’s only one other game (Davidson by 21.5 over Wofford) with a point spread of 20 or higher.

Back after the game with a wrap-up.
