Chiefs’ Holmberg picked for Team WHL

On the heels of a 4-2 loss to the Prince George Cougars on Wednesday night, the Spokane Chiefs and leading scorer Mitch Holmberg got a bit of good news on Thursday when the Western Hockey League announced the roster for Team WHL in the SUBWAY Super Series against the Russian all-stars. Here are some notes that are running in tomorrow's paper.

Spokane plays at Everett on Friday and in Kennewick against the Tri-City Americans on Saturday. If you're jonesing for some hockey as the NHL lockout lingers, don't worry. The Chiefs are back after their pair of road games for six home games. You'll get your fix soon!

Holmberg, Williams keep Chiefs’ streak intact

KELOWNA, British Columbia – Both of last year’s Spokane Chiefs’ playoff stars have picked up right where they left off in the spring, and they aren’t letting up. The Spokane Chiefs started their two-game road trip by earning their fifth win of the season and third straight on Wednesday night, and you’ll never guess who scored a bunch of goals and who blocked a bunch of shots.

All that and more below.

Chiefs blast Winterhawks

The Spokane Chiefs wrapped up a solid weekend of hockey tonight at the Arena. After scoring on their first shift of the game, the Chiefs went on to a 6-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks. That's three wins in a row now for Spokane, which trails both teams it beat this weekend in the standings.

Sorry for the late post, I had some internet issues back at the Arena tonight. I'm home now and am happy to share the link to tonight's game story and photo album. Also, here's a link to the game sheet.

Chiefs win second straight

Mitch Holmberg scored two goals and Dominik Uher added two assists in the Spokane Chiefs' 4-2 Western Hockey League victory over Seattle in their first game this season against the Thunderbirds. New Chief Todd Fiddler scored in his second straight game, and defensemen Brenden Kichton and Corbin Baldwin were plus-3 in the game.

Spokane's next three games are against the Everett Silvertips - tomorrow and Friday (Jan. 13) in Everett and Wednesday (Jan. 11) in Spokane.

With the trade deadline quickly approaching, any thoughts on possible moves?

Chiefs roll to 7th straight

The Spokane Chiefs scored early and often, rolling to a 6-1 win over the Victoria Royals in a Western Hockey League game Wednesday night, completing a perfect seven game homestand.

However, it was the first time since that first game the Chiefs scored first and didn’t have to come from behind in the second period or later, including three-straight third-period wins.

This time Mitch Holmberg, with his fourth goal, and Marek Kalus, his third, scored 34 seconds apart before the game was four minutes old. Later in the period  Dominik Uher got his fifth and Connor Chartier his first 40 seconds apart to close out the first period to make it 4-1.

That all but assured the Chiefs of an 8-0 start at home this season, the second-best such streak in team history. Spokane started 10-0 at home a decade ago.

3 stars: 3, Brenden Kichton (2 assists). 2, Mike Aviani (2 assists). 1, Marek Kalus (2 goals)

Chiefs dominate Rockets

Mitch Holmberg scored his first two goals of the season and Anthony Bardaro added two power play goals to spark the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-1 win over Kelowna at the Arena Saturday night.

However, it was 16-year old defenseman Jason Fram who got the Chiefs going with the first goal and second in two nights.

Cody Chikie scored for the Rockets late in the second period after it was 4-1. The Chiefs out-shot the Rockets 45-12, including 18-3 in the first period, getting the first 15 shots.

3 stars: 3, Fram, 2, Bardaro, 1 Holmberg
