Shock add offensive lineman

Offensive lineman Van Nelson has signed with the Spokane Shock. Nelson has two seasons of AFL experience, splitting the 2008 season with Philadelphia and Dallas, then playing for Dallas last year. In Philadelphia, Nelson and Shock head coach Rob Keefe shared a locker.

Day after ArenaBowl

I just exchanged text messages with Shock majority owner Brady Nelson, who spent the night in the hospital while his team was winning ArenaBowl XXIII. Texted Nelson: “Just heading home. A win sure helps.”

Nelson said NFL Network wasn’t available at the hospital, so he listened to the radio broadcast and got updates from his wife, who stayed in touch with general manager Adam Nebeker during the game.

On the field, Spokane dominated, 69-57. Only Milwaukee (72) and Orlando (75) scored more points against Tampa Bay this season. Spokane’s 69 points tied an ArenaBowl record (San Jose in 2004, Chicago in 2006).

Bunch of reading material this morning and an update on AFL teams that appear to be on the move. A recap of S-R coverage: Game story (nice headline - Rookies of the Year), Chris Anderson’s photos, Nelson’s surgery and John Blanchette’s column. A quick fix to my gamer: Brookins replaced Mulder (not Teems). Here’s a recap on arenafan.com and another here.

On the relocation front, league sources indicated that three franchises could have new addresses next season — Alabama to Atlanta, Bossier/Shreveport to New Orleans and Oklahoma City to Seattle. Atlanta seems to be a lock (more here) with the other two scenarios likely. The addition of Seattle and San Jose would give the AFL five western teams (Spokane, Utah, Arizona). San Jose, Kansas City, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are joining in 2010.
