WSU secondary learning quickly

The dorms in Pullman are open again and students are trickling back onto campus. School doesn't start for another week at Washington State but the football team's young defensive backs are studying hard for their first big test. That's the subject of our third WSU position preview.

Friday lunchtime Pac-12 links

Not very much WSU news or really any college football and basketball news since the Pac-12 schools wrapped up their spring practices but we've cobbled together a few links. In yesterday's paper we had a story on the Cougars' offseason plans and on the blog we took a look at three things we learned from spring. Bud Withers has a story on the end of spring as well. SportsOnEarth's Michael Weinreb had a nice profile of Mike Leach. Here is a scouting report of former WSU safety Deone Bucannon, who hopes to be selected early in next week's NFL Draft.

In other Pac-12 news … Washington has a slick new basketball court … Cal has parted ways with a basketball signee … Lots of wrap-ups and the like over on the Pac-12 Blog … Will UCLA's backfield hold up this season without more help from the linebackers?

Friday morning Pac-12 links

*We'll be holding a live WSU chat today at 11 a.m. here on SportsLink.

From Pullman — Yesterday's practice was almost uneventful. With this spring game on Saturday the Cougars took the pads off for Thursday's practice and went through their normal drills, which you can read about in our practice report. But not long after that report was filed the real news came down. We mentioned that Washington State hosted a pair of high-profile recruits during practice and before the night was over quarterback Tyler Hilinski became a Cougar. He may be the Cougars' quarterback of the future, but our story for the paper focuses on quarterback of the present Connor Halliday and his return to Joe Albi Stadium. It was a big day for Cougars of the past as well, with former WSU cornerback Marcus Trufant retiring with the hometown team. Garfield's Tramaine Isabell has decided to stick with WSU.

Oregon landed a big recruit of its own … As did the ASU basketball team … Some early odds are out and Vegas thinks WSU is more likely to win the national championship than Cal or Utah … Speaking of Utah, the student government passed a resolution to change the controversial fight song …
