It was just about this time a year ago that a national college basketball writer picked Sam Dower as his breakout player of the year. As it turned out, Dower's teammate and good friend Kelly Olynyk had the breakout season.
Dower now seems primed for a big senior year, maybe even his own breakout season. (Side note: Dower's stats from his freshman-junior year are actually better than Olynyk's first two seasons as a Zag). The Bulldogs held their first media day of the season and the last media opportunity until Kraziness in the Kennel on Oct. 12, so I checked in with Dower on his preparation for his last season in a Zag uniform.
There's also a note on Ryan Edwards, the 7-foot-1 freshman from Montana. It's way too early for decisions on redshirts, but the guess here is Edwards gets some time this season — in the 8-12 minute range — filling in at center behind Przemek Karnowski.
Here's a link to my article that will run in Wednesday's S-R.
Also, a few more notes below.
This feature wasn't supposed to start until Tuesday. Really haven't figured out a name yet – thanks for all the suggestions by the way, but want to run them by the boss and see what sticks – or a format, but what is the blogosphere better for than innovation and change? So what you see today may not be what you see tomorrow or next week or beyond. But for now, it is what it is, a bunch of question marks. Read on.
