Thompkins take turn on defense

One of the charms of the AFL for years was Ironman players, guys who lined up on both sides of the ball. Those days are largely gone, but injuries and roster limitations sometimes force players to leave their comfort zone.

Standout receiver Brandon Thompkins switched to defensive back last week with Paul Stephens out due to a leg injury. Thompkins did just fine as a DB, as we detail in this week's Shock notebook.

Thompkins faces former team

Brandon Thompkins wanted to be traded from Utah and he wanted to return to Spokane. That's exactly what happened last month when Spokane acquired the former Shock receiver.

Thompkins has made some improvements to his game, on and off the field, from his days with the team in 2011-12. Read more here.

The note at the bottom of the link was trimmed in the S-R. Below is the full note on ex-Shock quarterbacks (starters, backups, training camp participants, etc.) seeing time with other franchises.

Shock acquire WR Brandon Thompkins

Spokane has acquired wide receiver Brandon Thompkins from Utah in exchange for defensive back Josh Ferguson and defensive lineman Julian Miller.

Thompkins had 76 receptions, 26 for touchdowns, last season with Spokane. In four games this season with Utah, he had 27 csatches for 345 yards. He didn’t play in the Blaze’s win over Spokane last Saturday.

The addition of Thompkins (pictured above in a 2011 Spokane game) gives the Shock options for Saturday’s home game against Orlando. Shock receiver Kamar Jorden has a tryout at the Indianapolis Colts rookie minicamp this weekend.

Ferguson, a former Spokane player, was released by Utah last week and claimed by the Shock. He’s been on the refused to report list. Miller, an AFL rookie, hasn’t played in a game.

Spokane also signed former Shock defensive lineman Jon Williams and defensive back Antareis Bryan.
