Do you remember Greenough’s grocery store?

This week's Then and Now column will be about the Greenough family that operated a grocery store at Sixth Avenue and Washington Street on the lower South Hill from 1929 to 1985.  One person mentioned that it was a small suburban grocery store in its later years, associated with the IGA chain of stores and a place where neighborhood kids went to buy penny candy and shoppers picked up items on their way home.  Look for the column in The Spokesman-Review on Monday, June 8 on page 5.

Clipping mentions the impending marriage of burlesque performer Sally Rand and rodeo cowboy Thurkel "Turk" Greenough.

The store was started by a family of four boys who made their fortunes in mining, but also worked in railroad contracting and other businesses. The wealthy family's offspring became the stuff of society page gossip from Montana to California and the above clipping is from a newspaper in 1941.  Imagine the buzz of gossip as a Montana rodeo rider named Thurkel Greenough from Red Lodge weds famous burlesque performer Sally Rand. It was tabloid fodder until the marriage ended after a few years. Rand married again two more times.
