This week's Then and Now column is about Newman Lake, a small lake nestled in the hills of northeast Spokane County. There have been settlers there since the 1870s, but it became a destination in the first half of the 20th century with small hotels and resorts lining the shoreline. Today, it is mostly private.

A Spokesman.com user "McLeanvalentines" wrote: "I remember Shill's resort as well as Hampton's but we walked to the tiny Muzzy's resort at the far northeast part of the lake from our family cabin (no electricity or running water) for licorice sticks. A couple of years ago I looked for some sign Muzzy's once existed yet found nothing, not even an old foundation."
