Too Many Cooks

Game over

Today’s the last day for Around the Board, the new board game café in downtown Spokane.

Owner Jennifer DeHart is planning to move to Arizona.

DeHart, 38, opened Around the Board at 829 W. Riverside Ave.  on May 1. She got the idea for the café after seeing a similar one online about eight months ago, “and I thought, ‘What a cool idea!’”

She wanted to provide a fun, family-friendly environment for teens and youths and their parents or “anyone who wants to get together not over beer.”

Around the Board didn’t serve alcohol. On the menu: sandwiches, paninis, espresso drinks, smoothies and Italian sodas. The signature ATB panini features turkey, bacon, mayonnaise, Swiss cheese, tomato and avocado on asiago sourdough bread from Great Harvest Bread Co.

DeHart had been working at the Hastings entertainment store in Spokane Valley for three years. Before that, she managed hotels in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. Born in Spokane, she grew up in Post Falls and studied business administration at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

DeHart didn’t charge people to play. Games were there for free and for fun and for the taking. DeHart just asked that customers something while they were there.

DeHart offered  about 75 games. Life is her favorite. Candy Land is right up there, too.

There were the classics: chess, checkers, Chinese checkers, Chutes and Ladders, Battleship, Clue, Risk, Connect Four, Monopoly and Sorry! Look for Boggle, Apples to Apples, Trivial Pursuit and three kinds of Scrabble, too.

DeHart is hoping to open a similar board game café in Tempe, Arizona.
