Too Many Cooks

Thanks for sharing

The pie burned. Fingers burned. The pie dropped.

Then there was a mess to clean up and, worse, no dessert.

The Spokesman-Review Food section put out a call for your kitchen disaster stories, and we weren't disappointed. Culinary mishaps poured in via email and handwritten letters and, best of all, made us laugh.

Many involved in-laws, young brides and/or turkeys. While they all didn't take place on Thanksgiving, many catastrophes did occur during the holidays.

There won't be room to run all of them in the newspaper. But, between the Food section and the Too Many Cooks blog, we are hoping to make a home for them. They're just too good not to share.

So here's a big thank-you to all of our readers who submitted stories by the March 1 deadline.

And here are also a few vignettes to get you as excited about this project as we are at Too Many Cooks.

Corny

While I was the chef in charge of cooking for a large retirement facility, a 95-year-old man asked why I didn't served corn on the cob.

My answer was simple and carefully worded so as not to offend the elderly gent: "Most oldsters simply don't do well when trying to eat corn still on the cob."

His answer was just as simple: "You serve it, and I'll show you how old folk eat it."

I did, and he did – by cutting the kernels off with his table knife and eating them.

Wine and dine

Early on in our marriage, my husband had received a Playboy cookbook and decided to make stew.  He had the theory “more is better,” so when the recipe called for a small amount of red wine, he poured in most of a bottle.

Rumor had it the entire neighborhood was hung over for several days.

Too hot to handle

My dear hubby decided to fix a stew. Instead of paprika, he grabbed cayenne, and we burned our mouths. We laughed about it for years.
